Flowers alone are not to blame for your allergies. Although flowers can be problematic, other allergy-causing particles include grasses, trees, pet dander, winter air, and even genetics. Have you been suffering from allergies without really knowing what is causing them? Not only are allergies uncomfortable, but they can also make for some embarrassing situations.
In the winter months, some allergies can be properly managed using one of the best humidifiers.
Things you can do to help ease your allergies:
- Keep your doors and windows closed.
- Make sure to take a shower and shampoo your hair when you come in from outside. Your kids should do the same.
- Do not turn on your fans. They circulate air and can stir allergens, particularly the ceiling fan that’s above your bed.
- When you notice you are having a serious allergy problem, stay indoors. Allergies can be particularly bad during morning hours.
- Clean your room regularly. Clean or get rid of anything that accumulates dust like curtains, rugs, drapes, stuffed toys, and books. Your dog might need to sleep somewhere away from you. Use blinds and tile or linoleum for flooring.
- Speaking of dogs, the dog breeds with the least amount of allergens are bichon fries, Maltese, and poodle. Allergy-friendly cats include the rex or sphinx.
- Stay away from areas characterized by molds such as your basement. Avoid raking leaves and mowing the lawn. Use a humidifier and avoid letting your clothes stay wet for long periods. Don’t leave wet towels hanging around. Fix any plumbing issues or leaky roofs.
- Be cautious of molds on your refrigerated jells, jams, and on salt. Be wary of mold on meats like bacon, ham, and salami, and even some cheeses.
- Wash your bedding and pillowcases frequently. Use a pillowcase.
- Use hypoallergenic covers for your pillows, mattress, and box springs. Clean all sides of your bed.
Keep your lawn and home free of bugs and cockroaches. Dispose of all food waste properly. Keep an eye on areas around swimming pools. Remove any paper grocery bags, as cockroaches can make them their home.
Stay away from irritants such as perfumes, scented candles, eucalyptus, chalk dust, potpourri, tobacco smoke, newspaper print, and markers. Use hypoallergenic makeup and cleaning products.
If you notice you are allergic to some foods, avoid eating them. Some foods react with certain pollen for an even stronger allergic reaction.
